After prison “Play for the future”: the project for 30 young people in Palermo

A day of training courses, encounters and lots of sport: these were the elements characterising a visit by representatives of the Milan Foundation and CDP Foundation to 30 youngsters in Palermo for the project Play For The Future at the ASD Sant’Ernesto club.

Promoted by the two foundations in partnership with the Ministry of Justice, the initiative aims to enhance the social reintegration opportunities for more than 120 young people currently committed to the criminal justice system in Palermo, Naples, Catania and Bari, through programmes combining sports education and vocational guidance to support them through their probation period.

In Palermo in particular, thanks also to the support of the local Child Welfare Office (USSM), the project initially involved 15 kids but the sharp rise in interest saw it quickly expand to cover 30 young juvenile delinquents. Alongside sports education activities, a vocational guidance programme run in partnership with the Gi Group Foundation helps the participants explore and develop their skills and approach the job market through individual guidance sessions and group workshops. Three of them are currently engaged in their first work experience programme, identified through to the vocational guidance undertaken.

Numerous success stories have emerged thanks to the project. One is Luigi [not his real name], a 14-year-old Palermo boy from an outlying school in the Sicilian capital. Through the activities proposed, Luigi has discovered a whole new world beyond the street, choosing new experiences and actively participating in other initiatives promoted by the USSM, such as environmental projects and volunteer work.
Showing commitment and dedication, Luigi not only managed to pass his school certificate exams with flying colours, but has obtained a paid internship at a local sports club. Today he is studying for a vocational qualification and spends his afternoons working at the club, training and doing volunteer work. Thanks to his efforts and the support received, though still young, Luigi has embarked on a new road in life, discovering new prospects and opportunities for his personal growth and success.
