In the first half of 2024 electricity production from clean sources in Italy, up 27% compared to the same period in 2023, overtook electricity production from fossil fuels (-19%) for the first time. A trend in line with the objectives of the PNIEC (Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan), which aims to reach 131 GW of total installed power from renewable energies by 2030: an ambitious goal, with a positive impact in terms of decarbonisation and energy independence, which at the same time raises important challenges for the stability of the network and the safety of supplies.
In fact, the production of solar and wind energy is intermittent. These technologies must therefore be integrated with storage systems that are able to stockpile the energy and release it when required, guaranteeing households and businesses a safe and continuous supply of energy.
In line with this requirement, unparalleled investment in battery energy storage systems is taking place in Italy with projects for 23 plants of a total capacity of 1.7 GW. These are joined by 3 open cycle gas turbines of a capacity of 0.9 GW.
CDP’s involvement is consistent with its commitment to the energy transition and, in particular, to the development of alternative energies and the reduction of CO2 emissions.
